Amazon removed an AI-generated recap of the TV show Fallout, after viewers flagged it had made multiple errors.
The company introduced the AI TV show recap tool in November. The feature was designed to help US viewers catch up on what they had missed from Prime Video television programmes.
The feature is supposed to summarise the show’s events in a series of video clips with an AI-generated narration recapping the plot points.
In its latest recap of Fallout, the AI narration described “The Ghoul,” one of the show’s main characters, as a “1950s flashback.”
Reddit users caught the error, highlighting that the scene that had been shown was supposed to be from the year 2077.
The recap also failed to correctly summarise a scene between The Ghoul and Lucy MacLean, two of the show’s main characters. The AI recap tool misunderstood the characters’ dynamic – something Reddit users also noticed.
Amazon seems to have removed the recap feature completely for the time being, The Verge reported.
True or False?
AI systems have been known to “hallucinate” – relay misleading or completely false information.
Google’s AI Overviews feature – a summary of search results that appears at the top of the Google Search webpage – has been called out for spewing false information.
After the feature was first introduced in 2024, people spotted that the overview would sometimes cite satirical articles as a source (such as one from The Onion). The AI tool even delved into a conspiracy theory about former US president Barack Obama, after failing to summarise a research book from Oxford University, Forbes reported.
The same has taken place with AI news summary tools like Apple’s IPhone AI news alerts – which were halted in January for making repeated mistakes in its news headlines.
