Amazon to Launch AI Content Marketplace for Publishers

Amazon is reportedly launching a marketplace for publishers to sell their content to AI companies and product developers.

The content marketplace, first reported by The Information, was disclosed from presentation slides ahead of an Amazon Web Services (AWS) conference today.

The slides referenced a marketplace publishers can sell or license their content for use in AI tools and systems.

The presentation reportedly suggests that the marketplace platform will integrate into AWS AI offerings like Bedrock and Quick Suite.

Microsoft also launched its own Publisher Content Marketplace (PCM) – an AI licensing hub that lets publishers outline their usage terms for content to be used in AI tools.

In a statement, Microsoft said it had designed OCM with leading publishers including The Associated Press, Business Insider, USA Today, and Condé Nast.

A New Way to Monetise

Publisher content is often used to inform AI answer responses, online publisher content has also been used to train AI models – often without permission or consent.

This led to a number of lucrative licensing agreements between major AI companies and publishers, as a means to pay for content that had, in many cases, already been taken.

Publisher traffic has also been greatly reduced because of the emergence of AI, particularly since the launch of Google’s AI Overviews, which shows a summary of search results at the top of a page.

The Daily Mail famously announced its clickthrough rates had dropped 80-90 percent and traffic had fallen 15 percent last year.

The new marketplace would serve as a means for publishers to claim some authority over their content in an AI world, opening a new stream of revenue for them.
