Amazon will spend $10 billion on data centres to expand its AI innovation, the giant announced.
In a statement, Amazon said the data centres will be located in North Carolina and will create 500 jobs for the area. The firm will also bring data centre training and education programmes to the area.
This move signals Amazon’s investment into its Gen AI, which requires advanced cloud infrastructure, to rival competitors like Microsoft, Google, and ChatGPT owner Open AI.
The company has announced a number of AI products over the past year, including Bedrock, Trainium chips, and its own LLMs.
The news comes as AI chip manufacturer Nvidia overtook Microsoft to become the most valuably public traded company in the world – the firm has a $3.45 trillion market cap.
“Amazon’s $10 billion investment in North Carolina underscores our commitment to driving innovation and advancing the future of cloud computing and AI technologies,” said David Zapolsky, Amazon’s chief global affairs and legal officer.
“This investment will position North Carolina as a hub for cutting-edge technology, create hundreds of high-skilled jobs, and drive significant economic growth. We look forward to partnering with state and local leaders, local suppliers, and educational institutions to nurture the next generation of talent.”
