Apple is looking at the possibility of using Anthropic or OpenAI to power its digital assistant Siri, according to a report from Bloomberg.
Apple had announced plans to launch an AI-backed Siri assistant this year, but had to delay the release until next year due to tech challenges the company said it had encountered.
The move would signal a clear departure from Apple developing and using its own Gen AI tech, and would appear in an update of Siri later this year.
According to the Bloomberg report, the tech giant is working on a project called “LLM Siri”, which aims to build internal AI models. But Apple has apparently tested Anthropic and OpenAI models on its own cloud infrastructure.
Apple’s AI Struggle
The AI developments to Siri would enable the assistant to understand personal context and operate inside user phone apps, however these developments have been delayed since March 2025.
Bloomberg notes that the partnership between Apple and an LLM giant would mirror what Samsung has done with using Google’s Gemini and Samsung software to boost itself.
Amongst all of the tech giants, Apple has lagged in its development of AI models and tools.
A collaboration with Anthropic or OpenAI, could supercharge the company’s offering. However, to many onlookers, the move might seem like a reversal from previous plans to build out its own LLM capabilities.
Reportedly, Apple’s AI team is operating with a lack of clarity over the direction the company wants to take with its AI endeavours.
The news of possible third-party model use points to Apple attempting to pave some clarity and direction and boost its AI tools before getting left behind in a highly competitive market.
Apple is also reportedly looking at acquiring AI giant Perplexity.
