Apple has delayed AI upgrades for its voice assistant Siri for the foreseeable future, as announced in a statement on Friday. These upgrades were planned to be released this spring.
The tech giant reported it is struggling to finish developing the new AI features in-line with its planned deadline of this April, and that users should expect the update “in the coming year”.
The voice assistant’s new features would create a more personalised experience for iPhone users. For example, one of the new features, ‘on-screen awareness’, would enhance Siri to understand and interact with the content displayed on a user’s screen in real-time.
Another feature would allow Siri to automatically fill out forms, utilising information it collects from an ID photo.
Phone manufacturers are increasingly partnering with GenerativeAI platforms.
Last year, Apple announced Apple Intelligence, its Gen AI tool that can summarise, organise and generate information and content. Apple devices with the software have OpenAI’s model ChatGPT integrated within Siri.
However, Apple Intelligence has failed to gain the same traction from audiences as similar tools.
Last month, Samsung announced Gemini, Google’s AI technology, will be incorporated into its newest smartphones.
The recent delay in Siri’s upgrades is an additional setback for Apple after last month, when Apple Intelligence suspended its news summary feature after it reported inaccurate information in headlines.
