Apple has revealed it’s working on adding Visual Intelligence capabilities, a camera to understand physical surroundings, to Apple Watches within the next two years.
The addition of cameras to the Apple Watch allows the device to view its outside world and understand the physical environment. This helps the AI technology generate relevant information to its user.
The Visual Intelligence features set to be included in the Apple Watch are already available on the iPhone 16. Using the phone’s camera, Visual Intelligence can complete tasks such as finding information about a location or adding details from a nearby flyer to the device’s calendar.
Visual Intelligence is currently operated by OpenAI’s ChatGPT and utilises the AI model’s technology along with Google Search to access information.
When Apple rolls out the new Apple Watches in 2027, the company hopes for them to function solely on its own Apple Intelligence models.
Apple has worked on incorporating more advanced AI features into its products as new models find success.
So far, Apple’s AI products have experienced a stunted trajectory. The company recently delayed planned AI upgrades to its chatbot assistant, Siri after scrapping its AI news summary feature after it reported inaccurate information in headlines.
Apple also plans to integrate this Visual Intelligence technology into its wireless headphones AirPods. The upgraded AirPods are set to release in 2027, along with the new Apple Watches.
