From Novelty to Necessity: 2026 Ushers in the Era of Embedded Intelligence

What does the future hold for AI? This question is too often asked, with few being able to provide a bullish answer. With the rise of AI browsers and wearable devices, Qi Pan, Director of Computer Vision Engineering, Snap Inc., outlines why, as we near the end of 2025, next year AI will become less of a tool to test and play with, and more of an embedded element in our daily lives.

After a decade of hype cycles, prototypes and promising demos, 2026 will mark the point where the blending of artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR) technology is no longer a novelty but a necessity. What was once the domain of experimentation has become an intuitive, integrated layer that subtly, and not so subtly, transforms how we interact with life’s everyday moments – from navigating through a city or trying a new food recipe.

For years, innovation has been measured by spectacle, from devices that could wow audiences on stage to those that could create viral moments online. However, as consumer needs grow and evolve, the definition of technological progress has shifted. The question is no longer ‘what can this technology do?’ but ‘how does it improve what I already do?’ There is a clear appetite for innovation, but consumer expectations have evolved. Technology today should deliver instant value, not just a vision of a distant future.

From “What’s Cool” to “What’s Useful”

Augmented Reality is one example of an innovative piece of technology that provides endless possibilities, from interactive digital experiences and floating holograms to overlaying digital content in the world around us. But those early experiences have often felt more like a proof-of-concept than a useful value-add for users.

In 2026, that will change. AI is transforming AR from a means of entertainment to an everyday tool that can give us useful and personal information about the world around us. Instead of requiring deliberate input like a text or voice prompt, these devices will understand our environment and, crucially, our intent. For example, we’ll be able to see digital recipe ideas based on ingredients in our fridge, translate menus written in a foreign language, or highlight the quickest route home through crowded city streets while still seeing things in the real world around us. These are not flashy party tricks; they are frictionless functions that blend into daily life.

Today, AR-enhanced appliances and displays in our homes can respond to natural gestures and gaze rather than taps and swipes. Smart cooking assistants integrated into oven doors or splashbacks can now track eye movement and hand gestures to navigate recipes or adjust timers without physically touching the dials or screen.

Similarly, AR smart mirrors are starting to respond to looks or gestures, showing information, playlists or messages automatically based on gaze and context. In retail, virtual try-ons and immersive product demos are moving beyond apps. People can see how a piece of clothing will look on them virtually, without trying on the physical item. And in entertainment, AI-driven personalisation is curating experiences that feel unique to each viewer or listener, adjusting to our individual mood and environment.

From Phones to Glasses

We’re on the cusp of a shift in computing devices today – people will move from phones to wearable devices. From virtual reality headsets to smart glasses and Augmented Reality glasses, the potential of these devices to transform traditional sectors and how we interact with the world today is very promising. I’m particularly excited by our Augmented Reality glasses – at Snap, we’ve been developing our Spectacles over the last decade, before Snapchat even had chat and in 2026, we’ll release our first pair of consumer AR glasses that bring the power of AI and AR together to the public.

AR glasses can completely transform how we work, consume content and interact with the world around us. For example, Spectacles can use AI to provide live translation for whoever is talking and pin subtitles to them in real time so you can take part in group discussions without missing a beat.

There is also a huge opportunity for brands too – brands that treat AR as a feature bolted onto mobile apps are not truly embracing its power. The next wave will build experiences that feel native to 3D, hands-free environments, like Spectacles, which lets you pin a browser window with the recipe you’re following above the stove as you cook. Imagine shopping journeys that unfold naturally as users glance at products or navigation reminders that respond to where you look rather than what you type. This shift is not about miniaturising the smartphone; it’s about rethinking the interface entirely and blending it directly with the real world.

Adoption Through Personalisation and Trust

Despite the momentum we’ve seen this year, 2026 will still see many brands finding their feet with the new technology available to them. Mainstream uptake will depend on whether AI-powered personalisation can deliver real, intuitive utility. For these devices to become indispensable, they must act as extensions of the user by sensing context, anticipating needs and adapting instantly without explicit commands.

Innovation is no longer about proving what technology can do; it’s about refining how seamlessly it can be done. In 2026, the most advanced innovations won’t feel futuristic; they will feel familiar, natural and indispensable.
