Italian Publication Releases ‘World’s First’ AI-Generated Newspaper

Il Foglio

Il Foglio, an Italian newspaper, has published an edition created entirely by AI. The publication says it is the first in the world to publish this way.

The paper’s editor, Claudio Cerasa, said the AI edition is a part of a month-long experiment to demonstrate the impact of AI on journalism and daily life, and to make a statement about the shift within media careers as a result of AI.

The AI edition covers stories with topics ranging from politics to young European culture.

The front page includes a piece about “Italian Trumpians” and a column which criticises Russian president Vladimir Putin for a series of “broken promises”. There is also a story about the rise of short-term relationships among young adults, or “situationships.”

AI was used to support every aspect of the edition, including the headlines, quotes, and for giving pieces a more ‘playful tone’, the newspaper said.

While quotes are included in the pieces, none of them are attributed to humans.

The final page of the edition includes AI-generated “letters to the editor,” which mimic reader opinions on AI. “AI is a great innovation, but it doesn’t yet know how to order a coffee without getting the sugar wrong.” an artificial reader comments.

The AI edition went on newsstands and online on Tuesday 18th March.

Cerasa assured readers the edition remains true to the newspaper’s essence, despite its lack of human input.

“It is just another Foglio made with intelligence,” Cerasa says. “Don’t call it artificial.”
