OpenAI has now reached a recurring annual revenue of $10 billion, more than 60 percent than its revenue a year ago, a spokesperson from the company announced.
The significant hike illustrates the success of GenAI tools, such as OpenAI’s own ChatGPT, over the past year.
Clearly, there has been an increased demand in OpenAI’s subscription platforms, and there are currently over 3 million paying ChatGPT subscribers and 500 million weekly users.
This is up from the 2 million subscribers reported as recently as February 2025.
In addition to its consumer and business tools, ChatGPT has offerings for developers, such as the company’s API branch that makes up a third of total revenue.
The company is reportedly targeting $125 billion in revenue by 2029, according to The Information.
Doubling Revenue in a Year
Since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, OpenAI triggered a wave of hysteria and investment into the AI industry, and in many ways has been the face of Gen AI altogether.
To give some clarity to OpenAI’s success, here are some of the factors that contributed to the firm more than doubling its revenue.
In March, OpenAI conducted the largest private tech deal in history by closing a $40 billion funding round. The company is currently backed by some major investors including SoftBank and Microsoft.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has also made headlines being associated with President Donald Trump as part of his $500 billion AI venture Stargate.
