OpenAI Releases Agentic Tool ‘Deep Research’ To Create Reports In Minutes

OpenAI has introduced Deep Research, an AI tool designed to sift through information across the internet and generate fully cited research papers in minutes.

Deep Research can autonomously carry out multi-step research tasks by gathering, analysing, and synthesising information from various online sources to generate comprehensive reports.

OpenAI introduced the AI agent in a YouTube video, making its official launch for ChatGPT Pro subscribers. Kevin Weil, chief product officer at OpenAI, described Deep Research as capable of performing in minutes what could “take a person anywhere from 30 minutes to 30 days.”

Unlike other OpenAI models that deliver near-instant responses, Deep Research takes between 5 and 30 minutes to produce its results. While still faster than a human, OpenAI said the tool’s longer response time is a result of it tackling more complex problems than other products like ChatGPT.

Deep Research is part of a growing category of ‘AI agents’, which differ from traditional generative AI by acting independently and adjusting their approach when encountering obstacles. This makes agentic AI well-suited for tasks like personalised shopping recommendations, ad targeting, and advanced problem-solving.

Despite its high accuracy scores, OpenAI researchers acknowledged that Deep Research is not immune to AI’s common pitfall: hallucinations  – where the model fabricates or misinterprets information. As such, potential inaccuracies have been labelled as a limitation by OpenAI, but the tech company reassured users these issues are expected to improve over time.

Deep Research vs DeepSeek?

Deep Research’s launch comes amid increased competition in the AI space, and some spectators are claiming it’s a direct response to the recent debut of China’s own chatbot DeepSeek. Chinese startup DeepSeek has dominated headlines recently with its R1 reasoning model, a rival to OpenAI’s o3.

News of DeepSeek sent shockwaves through the AI world, partly due to surprise that an advanced AI model could come from outside of America. This caused stock prices at major tech firms to plummet – AI chip giant Nvidia’s market cap reportedly lost $600 billion.

DeepSeek is also under investigation for allegedly using OpenAI’s data to train its models, raising concerns about intellectual property and AI ethics.

OpenAI, however, remains focused on expanding its technology. “Our ultimate aspiration is a model that can uncover and discover new knowledge for itself,” Chen said.

Deep Research is currently available to ChatGPT Pro users, with plans to expand access to ChatGPT Plus, Team, Education, and Enterprise in the coming months.
