PlayStation Patents AI-Generated Podcasts Voiced by Game Characters

PlayStation owner Sony Interactive Entertainment has patented its idea to create AI-generated podcasts to be voiced by game characters.

The new patent titled ‘LLM-Based Generative Podcasts for Gamers’ will enable personalised podcast episodes for gamers featuring the likeness of video game characters, spotted by Video Games Chronicle.

Sony said the voice of well-known characters like God of War’s Krato could be used in the podcast episodes.

The patent, which was applied for in July 2024 and granted in late January, serves as a tool that could generate podcasts for game news or system updates in the voice of video game characters.

Revolutionising Player Engagement?

The patent description reads: “As recognised herein, video game platforms currently lack the ability to provide unique and targeted content to gamers to update the gamers about things that are happening on the platform.”

The move aims to give gamers this information within the platform rather than through tutorial videos elsewhere online.

In this sense, Sony aims to create an experience for game players whereby they receive a bespoke podcast episode tailored to the games they’ve recently played.

Sony shared that two video game characters from different games could even collaborate on one podcast episode.

The move from Sony shows how GenAI can be used to personalise the game player’s experience and build more engagement.
